Plenty of teams first hear "we need SOC 2" from a big prospect and treat it like a certificate to go buy. They picture a badge, a PDF, and a signature at the end. Then the auditor arrives, asks for eight months of evidence nobody was collecting, and the deal that started the whole thing begins to slip.

SOC 2 isn't a badge. It's an independent auditor's opinion on whether your controls actually worked over a stretch of time. That "over time" part is what makes a Type II report worth having, and it's also what trips up teams who leave evidence to the end. What a SOC 2 report actually is

A SOC 2 report is written by a licensed audit firm after it examines your controls against a set of criteria called the trust services criteria. Unlike ISO 27001, SOC 2 isn't a public certificate with a logo. It's a detailed report you share under NDA with customers and prospects, and their security team reads it closely. The five trust services criteria

Every SOC 2 engagement is built on the trust services criteria. Security is always in scope. The other four are optional, and you include the ones that match what you actually promise customers.

  • Security. The foundation, sometimes called the common criteria. It covers access control, change management, risk assessment, and how you protect systems from unauthorized access. If you do nothing else, you do this.
  • Availability. Whether your service is there when customers expect it. Think monitoring, capacity planning, backups, and a tested recovery plan, not a specific uptime number.
  • Processing integrity. Whether your system processes data completely, accurately, and on time. This matters most when you calculate, transform, or move data on a customer's behalf.
  • Confidentiality. Whether information you've agreed to keep confidential stays that way, from contracts to internal roadmaps, through encryption, access limits, and secure disposal.
  • Privacy. Whether you collect, use, retain, and dispose of personal information in line with the notice you give people. Privacy overlaps with GDPR but isn't the same thing.

Pick the criteria that reflect your promises. Adding all five to look impressive just gives the auditor more to test and gives you more evidence to maintain.

Type I versus Type II

The two report types answer different questions.

A Type I report looks at a single point in time. It asks whether your controls are designed well enough to meet the criteria on the day the auditor checks. It's a snapshot. You can earn one quickly, which makes it a reasonable first step, but it says nothing about whether the controls actually ran.

A Type II report looks at an observation period, usually 3 to 12 months. It asks a harder question: did these controls operate effectively the whole time? The auditor doesn't just confirm you have an access review process. They check that reviews happened every quarter across the period, with records to prove it.

That's the difference buyers care about. A Type I says you built the machine. A Type II says the machine ran. Enterprise security teams almost always want the Type II, and many will accept a Type I only as a bridge while you complete your first full observation window.

What an auditor samples across the period

A Type II auditor doesn't read every log. They sample. Across the observation window they pull specific instances and ask you to prove the control worked each time. Typical samples include:

  • Access changes. Show that a new hire got the right access on their start date and a leaver lost it on their last day.
  • Change management. Pick a handful of changes and show each one was reviewed and approved before it shipped.
  • Access reviews. Prove the quarterly review actually happened, with someone signing off on who has access to what.
  • Backups and recovery. Show backups ran and that you tested a restore, not just that a policy exists.
  • Incidents. Walk through any security incidents and show you followed your own process.
  • Vulnerability management. Show scans ran on schedule and that findings were triaged and fixed.

The catch is timing. If the auditor asks for the Q2 access review and you never ran one, you can't create it in Q4. The evidence has to exist from the moment the control was supposed to fire. That single fact is why continuous evidence beats everything else.
